Social no-working
Management Today (Australian Institute of Management) - 10 October 2008
I've heard mixed things about letting staff loose on social networking sites.
Results from an 2008 Intranet DASHBOARD (iD) Global Intranet Benchmarking Survey indicate that Australian businesses remain reluctant to embrace social networking and Web 2.0 functionality at work.
Of global respondents, only 32 per cent indicated that management supported social networking strategies in the workplace, down 10 per cent since the 2007 survey. And, while 30 per cent of global respondents indicated no interest, the Australian figure is higher at 33 per cent.
Adoption of instant messaging has dropped 13 per cent (49 per cent to 36 per cent). The only Web 2.0 collaboration application that has increased in its adoption is the use of corporate blogs, up 6 per cent from 39 per cent, while news, search and wiki tools have increased in popularity.
"Web 2.0 collaborative tools are often abused by staff for personal … use. Environments such as Facebook offer functionality that can distract staff from their work," says Connie Pandos, Founder and Director of Intranet DASHBOARD (iD). But "intranet applications that deliver tangible benefits to the user, improve business efficiencies and increase productivity are proving to be increasingly popular."
