You commute because they don't trust you- Kansas City Star
An executive survey finds that the major reason why more U.S. companies don't allow telecommuting is because they don't trust employees to maintain productivity.
The lack-of-trust barrier is slowing breaking down, according to Intranet DASHBOARD, an intranet communication software company. Intranet DASHBOARD reached 390 executives for the telecommuting survey.
The company had a self interest at heart. If more companies allowed telecommuting, there'd potentially be more customers for its communication products.
Companies with successful telecommuting arrangements have scored reductions in overhead costs and absenteeism, and even some increases in productivity.
Still, telecommuting is considered a rare perk. A more common option is flexible hours -- workers still come to the work site.
Intranet DASHBOARD, in releasing the results of its survey, noted that the Information Technology Association of America did another survey. This one found that slightly more than a third of workers surveyed said they'd choose the ability to telecommute over a pay raise.
Obviously, some management fears about telecommuting are justifiable. The privilege granted an employee who lacks self motivation or sufficient self control could backfire.
There also are legitimate concerns about security, bandwidth and IT support.
And something the survey didn't measure: The role of collegiality among co-workers. It's possible to have a cyberspace team and plenty of e-mail and phone communication. Sometimes, though, it just isn't the same as chatting with the boss at the elevator door. Despite the advances of technology, relationships still are better made in person.
