IT telecommuters on rise, others hampered by trust- The Globe and Mail, Canada
More information technology professionals are working out of the office, thanks to the growth of wireless technology and Internet applications, a survey finds.
The survey shows that 44 per cent of 1,400 chief information officers surveyed said that their company's IT work force is telecommuting at the same or a higher rate than five years ago; just 3 per cent said remote work is less frequent.
Among the benefits that working remotely was said to bring to the IT telecommuters: improved retention and morale because of better work-life balance, cited by 34 per cent of the chief information officers, and increased productivity thanks to reduced commuting time, raised by 28 per cent, the survey developed by Robert Half Technology found.
But 44 per cent of the respondents also said that work quality suffers because of less in-person contact among colleagues and 30 per cent said they felt telecommuters were less productive because they have less oversight.
Meanwhile, another survey finds that more widespread adoption of telecommuting is hampered by a lack of trust in remotely working employees.
The survey by Intranet DASHBOARD found that 70 per cent of 390 respondents said they were restricted from telework, the major reason being upper management's lack of trust in staff working outside of the office, and concerns about productivity.
